What dermatologists do to look younger

Dermatologists must know the secrets to looking younger, so here is what one has to say:

Mary Lupo, MD, age 55, Clinical Professor of dermatology at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans told Women's Day mag (Feb. 1, 2010) her personal routine:

Start each day with Philosphy Microdelivery Peel with separately packaged crystals and gel. Use on wet skin for gentle exfoliation or on dry for more intense effect followed with soothing gel.

Next apply vitamin C serum  as a non-irritating topical anti-oxidant that brightens your skin while repairing it.

Last, Dr. Lupo applies a moisturizer with sunscreen (Docs recommend you add Vitamin D supplements if you use sunscreen all the time or you will become deficient which can lead to weight gain and depression).

She likes L'Oreal, Neutrogena, and Olay products. Dr. Lopu recommends one with a chemical barrier like Mexoryl for best protection, unless you have sensitive skin, then use sinc oxide or titanium dioxide products.

She washes her face each night with Philosophy Purity Made Simplebecause it does not change skin ph and negates the need for a toner.

Finally, the doc ends her day with  retinoid like Renova (one tube costs about $175 and lasts at least 6 months or more, by prescription) or Tazorac to encourage skin cell turnover, reduce fine lines and discolorations like skin spots. There are good over the counter retinoid creams but they are not as effective. Try Good n' Natural's version for less than 8 dollars.

Her one simple rule for great looking skin? Eat well and healthy, never smoke or tan, use retinoids and antioxidants. I drink my antioxidants and get 13 servings of antioxidant fruits and veggies in only two 2-ounce servings of MonaVie juice, a day.

Eating for maximum fat loss and muscle building

Eating Higher Quality Foods is Not Enough! What?

On the surface it seems that not eating junk food and eating only healthy, living, unprocessed foods would do the trick. But in order to fuel your fat burning engine, you need to take it a step further. You need to eat smaller meals more frequently. I talked about this in depth in my best selling book Effortless Weightloss: Small Changes That Lead to Extraordinary Results!

For maximum weight loss and fat loss, you’ll want to eat 5-6 small meals per day, with protein and carbs combined in each meal. Use a high quality, organic meal substitute shake or snack bar in place of, or in between, 2-4 of your meals to aid in eating more often with fewer calories. I recommend RVL.

Dr. Mercola suggests we also:

1.Learn about the timing of your meals in reference to your wake-up and bed time, and your workout time. (See tomorrow's post)

2.Learn about your macro-nutrient totals. That’s just a fancy word for the optimal percentage of carbs, proteins, and fats in each of your meals.

3.Use good sources of acceptable proteins and carbohydrates. (See below)

4.Determine your nutritional type, which will indicate the ideal ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that your body needs for optimal performance.

SO, Beneficial sources of protein include:
•Organic chicken (dark meat for protein types)

•Fish (as long as it is free of heavy metals and other contaminants.

•Organic free-range eggs

•Lean, grass-fed red meat

•Whey protein

•Nuts and seeds

Beneficial sources of carbohydrates (fibrous veggie type) include:
•Any vegetable (the more colorful the better)

•Dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach

•Apples

•Grapefruit

Good sources of starchy carbohydrates are:
•Brown or wild rice

•Yams/ sweet potatoes

•Bananas

Come back next time for what to eat after your workout for maximum results!

Simple things you can do NOW to prevent cancer

Here are all of the simple steps you can take to virtually eliminate your cancer risk:

1. Normalize your vitamin D levels with safe amounts of sun exposure. This works primarily by optimizing your vitamin D level. Ideally, it would be best to monitor your vitamin D levels.

2. Control your insulin levels: Make certain that you limit your intake of processed foods and sugars as much as possible. Cinnamon is a natural insulin controller.

3. Get appropriate amounts of animal-based omega-3 fats. Use products that naturally improve your health and cholesterol levels, like Pulse with Resveratol, or (m)Mun with patented Wellmune to boost immunity naturally and effectively.

4. Get appropriate exercise. One of the primary reasons exercise works is that it drives your insulin levels down. Controlling insulin levels is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cancer risks. The Sole F80 is a great quality treadmill at a reasonable price, usually free shipping. I use it daily, especially in the winter months.

5. Eat according to your nutritional type. The potent anti-cancer effects of this principle are very much under appreciated. When we treat cancer patients in our clinic this is one of the most powerful anti-cancer strategies we have.

6. Have a tool to permanently erase the neurological short-circuiting that can activate cancer genes. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so make sure this is addressed. My particular favorite tool for this purpose, as you may know, is the Emotional Freedom Technique.

7. Only 25 percent of people eat enough vegetables, so by all means eat as many vegetables as you are comfortable with. Ideally, they should be fresh and organic. However, please understand that, frequently, fresh conventionally grown vegetables are healthier than organic ones that are older and wilted in the grocery store. They are certainly better than no vegetables at all, so don't use that as an excuse. If you are a carb nutritional type you may need up to 300 percent more vegetables than a protein nutritional type. Get 13 servings of organic fruits and vegetables per day in just 2 ounces of MonaVie whole berry Acai juice! Order it here and check this need off!

8. Make sure you are not in the two-thirds of the population who are overweight and maintain an ideal body weight. Order organic, nutritionally complete RVL here and lose up to an average of 30 lbs. in 10-12 weeks!

9. Get enough high-quality sleep.

10. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution. Clean the toxins out of your body with the most powerful antioxidant on earth: whole berry Acai. Click here for the only whole berry source.

11. Boil, poach or steam your foods, rather than frying or charbroiling them.

New defense against frightening "superbugs" offers hope

If you are concerned about the new "superbugs" like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), you are not alone.

A research team led by Monina Klevens at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that MRSA causes 19,000 deaths every year in the U.S. - that's more than HIV/AIDS.

Super bugs are hard to treat in part because they can spread quickly once gaining access to the bloodstream; and because superbugs are resistant to a major class of antibiotics (beta-lactams,) limiting your physician to use just a small set of antibiotics, each of which has serious side effects.

Because MRSA is a bacteria, it can be contracted easily. The bacteria is usually spread by someone that is carrying the disease, and when they get any of their bodily fluids (sweat, spit or blood) on any surface other people can come into contact with. The bacteria must have a place to enter into the body and go into the blood stream, so it can enter through cuts, scrapes, wounds or even areas of the skin that are weak or broken. The elderly are especially susceptible to MRSA due to their thinner skin, and people with psoriasis and eczema are also at a higher risk of contracting the bacteria.

They are fairly easy to catch as they are carried by bodily fluids (sweat, spit or blood) on any surface other people can come into contact with. The bacteria enters through cuts, scrapes, wounds or even areas of the skin that are weak or broken. "The elderly are especially susceptible to MRSA due to their thinner skin, and people with psoriasis and eczema are also at a higher risk of contracting the bacteria."

Common sites of infection: school gyms, fitness centers, health care centers, basically anywhere people are likely to leave behind their blood or sweat.

Since some strains of MRSA have already become resistant to the most effective of these, treatment takes longer and is more costly. "Even for those who survive, the price of MRSA is high: a patient who contracts it while hospitalized stays an average 10 days longer and costs an additional $30,000." says Walsh and Fischbach of Scientific American.

Without an effective pharmaceutical treatment, many people are turning more to preventative measures to protect themselves against superbugs. Doctors, professional athletes, and scientists, alike are touting the benefits of the patented immune-boosting supplement MonaVie (M)m?n.

MonaVie (M)m?n (pronounced "em-mune") is a beneficial blend of 19 fruits and the proprietary, patent-protected ingredient Wellmune®, and is scientifically formulated to optimize the body's natural defenses with powerful antioxidants (help protect against free radicals) and support the immune system on a daily basis.

What exactly does Wellmune® do? Basically it preps your immune system to identify and neutralize potentially harmful microbes. The ingredient is a natural beta-glucan polysaccharide (a complex carbohydrate) isolated from the cell walls of a proprietary strain of baker's yeast.

Jeff Graham, VP of Product Management says "MonaVie brings innovation in the healthy lifestyle product category with the introduction of (M)m?n. We have exclusive rights to market Wellmune® in our industry, delivering a daily immune defense solution to the health-conscious consumer who is on the go."

The best part is that it only takes 2 ounces of MonaVie (M)m?n, twice a day, to deliver a whopping 250 mg of Wellmune®, which has been shown in clinical research to help strengthen your body's natural immune defenses and promote overall well being.

In fact, in a four week study published in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine (2009) 8, 509-515, marathon athletes who took Wellmune® reported "During the course of the 4-week study, subjects in the treatment groups (250 mg and 500 mg BETA-GLUCAN per day) reported significantly fewer upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, better overall health and decreased confusion, fatigue, tension, and anger, and increased vigor based on the POMS survey compared to placebo."

Abdallah Candies' Caramel Apples

It's that time of year again. The leaves are turning golden red, and pumpkins line country drives dotted with plucky, hand-lettered signs glued to craft sticks. Watermelon and sweet corn make way for butternut squash and dried mixed nuts, and caramel apples balance happily on produce shelves, all dressed up in pretty, white, paper wrappers.

But, really, what can you expect from a store-bought caramel apple? More often than not, the apple is bruised, if not downright mushy, not to mention partially cooked from it's long ago drowning in overheated caramel.

Speaking of that brown, stiff glob of sugary rubber, it rarely meanders past the mid-point of said apple. Not particularly appetizing.

However, and you knew this was coming, hope springs eternal.

This very day in Coborn's Grocery in Little Falls, Minnesota a sale was to be had on caramel apples. Little eyes turned to saucers and tiny lips pursed into pink hearts full of desire for the golden orbs cased in clear plastic, complete with a happy, green label which said, "homemade." The kids were pretty excited, too.

Into the cart went three Abdallah Homemade Caramel Apples and into the car went three giddy children. About thirty seconds later, four of us were smacking sticky lips with silly, sugar-laden grins.

Abdallah Candies Who knew?
If you're in Minneapolis, Minnesota - pretty much everyone.

Since 1909, the fourth-generation business remains family owned, still using the old recipes, and even some of the original equipment. Only the good stuff, like copper kettles.

Abdallah creates traditional chocolates, caramels, and toffees as well as trendy flavors like licorice and chocolate mint, and a customer favorite "Cashew Grizzlies, in a 60,000 sq. ft. facility complete with viewing area. You can buy piece by piece in the store, or order online, even wholesale.

If Abdallah's can be judged by their caramel apples, dig in, you won't be sorry.

Want to lose weight or lose fat? Second of the top ten fat-burning foods to start eating now

Coconuts and coconut oil.

According to Bruce Fife, ND, over the past 30 years fat consumption has decreased by 11%, and total calorie consumption has decreased by 4%, yet two-thirds of the people who lose weight on low-fat diets gain it all back within one year.

The fact is that eating enough of the right fats is essential for long term weight loss. Fat slows down the emptying of the stomach so that you feel full longer. As a result, you consume fewer calories.

While all fats suppress the appetite, those with Medium Chain Triglycerides are better for weight loss.

A recent study in The Journal of Nutrition shows that replacing your usual fats with MCT fats, like coconut oil, will help you burn more energy, eat less, and that "both animal and human trials suggest a greater satiating effect of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) compared with long-chain triglycerides (LCT)." In essence, you are satisfied with less food, and burn fat more quickly and easily.

Dr. Andrew Weil notes "that coconut oil is high in lauric acid and contains trace amounts of caprylic acid, both of which appear to have antiviral and antifungal properties, and support immune function," although he reminds us that coconut oil is still a saturated fat, and should be used in moderation. Other studies support the antiviral effect, in that coconut oil has been found to delay, and reduce the spread of viruses, including HIV.

Back to the first of the top ten fat-burning foods.

Review of The Asian House Lao-Thai Restaurant in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota

The Asian House is tucked away in a mini strip mall in downtown Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. The only staff you are likely to see once you arrive is your bubbly, young server who cheerfully takes orders, fills water, and cleans tables, chatting as she goes with the regulars. It kind of feels like a Lao-Thai version of your home town diner, well, if your diner serves Beef Pho and Pad Se Ew.

There is no buffet, no deep fried sweet and sour chicken, and your meal won't be out in a jiffy because it is made to order by real chefs, expertly trained in Thailand and Laos. The meal is worth the wait, delicious and mild enough for any palate, unless you request it spicy.

The menu has a good selection of soups, noodles, and rice entrees as well as beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and curries. The beef and seafood Pho, pronounced "fuh" (soup made with rice noodles and meat in broth, accompanied by fresh bean sprouts and if you ask, fried garlic) were aromatic, tasty, and filling.

The house specialties include Lob (ground chicken or beef seasoned and served with sticky rice), Lot Na (meat and Chinese broccoli in a creamy egg-drop broth), Mieng Lao (a healthy platter of fresh lettuce, cilantro, scallions, beef, noodles and egg rolls), Kowh Poonh (vermicelli noodles with cabbage, bean sprouts, cilantro and mint), and Pad Se Ew - you've got to know what this is, right? It's a yummy noodle dish stirred with eggs, Chinese broccoli, meat, and vegetables.

Appetizers like fresh spring rolls (fresh rice noodle wrapper around crunchy raw vegetables, warm chicken, and loads of cilantro) with chili garlic oil dip - amazing, try it - or egg rolls, cream cheese won tons, or fried tofu with black bean sauce will run you from $2.95 - $5.95. Entrees average $8 or $9 and portions are generous.

Review of Ciatti's Ristorante in St. Cloud, Minnesota

Review of Ciatti's Ristorante:

The parking area of Ciatti's Ristorante was full, but a single space beckoned from the far end of the lot. Nearly running to beat the occupants of just-parked vehicles to what surely would be standing room only in the new restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately by a friendly greeter. Even better, a table no where near the kitchen, which for some reason seems to be the first choice that comes to mind in our case, for greeters in fine restaurants everywhere.

Ciatti's motto includes genuine smiles; a casual, comfortable atmosphere; and made-from-scratch Italian-inspired dishes, and on this night, the eatery lived up to it's word. Service was prompt, and the wait staff knew the menu - and, er, correct pronunciation - intimately. All your Italian favorites were available, with prices very reasonable all things considered.

The most expensive entrées were the Filet of Beef with Marsala mushrooms, seasonal forest mushrooms, Marsala wine, and veal glace for $23.99 and the New York Strip with roasted tomato demi glace, veal glace, red wine, and marinated fire roasted tomatoes for $23.99, but the Chicken Parmigiana, Marsala, and Saltimbocca were all around $15.

An incredible variety of pasta dishes were priced from $11.99 - $16.99. There were also fish options (pesce) and, believe it or not, a couple of Italian-inspired burgers. You'll want to start your meal with a Little Red Dress Martini - delicious - and a bargain at $4.99 on special, as well as an appetizer like antipasto, flatbreads, pizza, or zuppe (soup.)

The food was very good, and portions were ample especially for the Mostaccioli (pasta baked with Italian sausage, mushroom, onion and marinara sauce and topped with a huge, melted, golden cap of cheese, for $13.99.) The sausage in this dish was note-worthy, just a hint of spiciness and richly flavored.

The Fettuccine Alfredo was the most affordable dish at only $11.99, not as costly as that of near-by Mi Famiglia Ristorante nor as creamy or delightful, but certainly full of Parmesan flavor. The texture of the sauce was a bit grainy, although not unpleasant.

All entrées came with a dressed salad, and warm, Italian herbed bread, and soft breadsticks. Accompanying the bread was a plate filled with aromatic olive oil, grated Parmesan, and freshly cracked pepper, for dipping.

The menu included an ample wine list, sure to satisfy any palate and budget. The house Chianti (Bella Sera - Italy) was smooth, full-bodied, and decidedly not dry - perfect. A good swirl around the glass revealed healthy legs and lovely aroma of berries. Food wine pairing suggestions were noted on the menu, and available from the well-versed server.

All in all, Ciatti's Ristorante is worth the trip. The menu is varied, includes gluten-free and kid-friendly options, and if it's your birthday the meal is free - up to $15. The service at Ciatti's is excellent, as is the bar,the ambiance, and lest we forget, the dessert. Try the Drunken Chocolate Cake with Frangelico cream for $7.99 and try not to gasp at the ridiculous size of this triple layer chocolate masterpiece.

From the chocolate cake to the chocolate mouse-like filling, to the solid chocolate layer encapsulating the Frangelico-infused layers, it's a chocolate dream; or coma - don't even think about trying to finish it all, even with a buddy.

If you like the food, sign up for Ciatti's cooking classes. $40 gets you a four-course cooking class presented by Ciatti's own Executive Chef Mark Marthaler in their intimate kitchen setting.

Dr. Lou Niles tells us how we can reverse the aging process

Are you at all concerned about aging or how about cancer? If you are alive, then on some level you have got to be thinking about your health, your appearance (come on, now), your virility, or your mental state as you get older.

Most of us think there is nothing we can do about aging; it's like death and taxes: inevitable. That may be true, but there is nothing that says we have to sit around and let our brains pickle and our skin prune with no recourse.

Here is a video by Dr. Lou Niles explaining how anti-oxidants enable the body to heal itself. Short and very good!

Why is acai Dr. Perricone's number one Super Food?

Dr. Perricone, author of  many books including:

What's so special about this little berry? In this Oprah.com article, it is reported that Açaí pulp contains:

  • "A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.
  • A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
  • An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration."
This expert continues to say that acai contains a remarkable fatty acid which resembles that of olive oil in that it is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid, which helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane. The two work together to help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and as we all now know, inflammation causes aging.

So, it's no secret that the açai berry has been prized for centuries as a source of health, energy, and longevity, long known as one of nature’s top superfoods. What's my recommended source? Without a doubt it's MonaVie.

MonaVie freeze-dried açai is unparalleled in its antioxidant strength. MonaVie’s freeze dried açai boasts more than 15 times the antioxidant capacity of whole blueberries and more than 20 times the antioxidant capacity of whole raspberries!

The science is overwhelming. In a nutshell, pre-clinical research on the freeze-dried açai used in MonaVie products shows it to have:
a. A high antioxidant capacity, especially against superoxide free radicals.
     i. Freeze-dried açai in a SOD assay (SORAC) had one of the highest tested antioxidant capacities of
any fruit or vegetable to fight superoxide free radicals.

b.A high antioxidant capacity, especially against peroxyl free radicals.

c. A nutritional analysis of the freeze-dried açai used in MonaVie products found it to have anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and other flavonoids.

How does this help you and me? Well, in comparing ORAC scores, four ounces of MonaVie has the equivalent antioxidant capacity of approximately 13 servings of fruits and vegetables.

So, consuming MonaVie helps you to maintain the healthy and active lifestyle you desire. People, like you and me, who regularly consume MonaVie have reported better health and an overall sense of well being.

If it's acai you want, then MonaVie products offer a simple and convenient solution to help meet some of your body’s nutritional needs. MonaVie’s premier açai blend delivers antioxidants and phytonutrients to help maintain and promote good health.

Lose a dress size this week - I did it and you can too

I am getting ready for vacation and feeling like I need a boost to get out of maintenance mode, and lose a few pounds quick so I can pig out without concern on the beach!

Now my book is about making slow changes so they last, and that is what I have done to keep in my size 1's and 3's for the past two years.

This week I want a quick loss that if I maintain - great, but honestly, who cares! I want to get bikini ready for a 6 day vacation during which I can pig out and not worry about my waistline!

For a quick drop, I go to my handy 6-day mini-makeover card that came in my Michael Thurman's 6 Week Body Makeover Kit. I have had this thing since Matthew was born, and I used it to lose the 11 pounds that hung on after his birth. I got it off in about a week, but probably because I started right after his birth. I do the mini-makeover if I want to drop a dress size in 6 days, because it really works.

You do get sick of eating 2-3 ounces of protein (chicken, turkey, or steak) 5-6 times a day (yes you will get sick of it, protein is so filling and I eat every two hours till about 7 p.m.) but you will NEVER be hungry.

You also need to walk (not do heavy-breathing cardio, just a nice, walk) for one hour a day for 6 days. I eat dinner at 7 pm and switch the veggies for a slow-sugar release carb like a red potato or sweet potato, and add a banana or apple. A half an hour later I get on my treadmill and watch a t.v. show for an hour, and I am done!

I have gone down a size already, and I can see my abs again. Normally I hang out at ten lbs. over my "best" weight just because I can maintain that with no purposeful exercise and eating pretty much what I want - although I am a pretty healthy eater - I just eat a lot! So, order it. It isn't cheap, but if you do it, it does work.

Note, I said if you do it. You know yourself, if you are going to add it to the stack of work-out dvd's next to your television (guilty) then don't waste your money. Buy my book for a measly $15 and add in a tip a week. Believe me, the weight will come off, just not in a week!

The sneaky new fat in your food: it's worse than trans fats

We have all been trained to watch out for unhealthy fats, so as long as the packaging says "no trans or saturated fats," no problem, right? Wrong.

In an attempt to find a shelf stable non-trans fat, manufacturers are turning to a new modified saturated fat called Interesterified Fat (IE). Research shows that IE, like other saturated fats, profoundly raises the ratio of LDL (bad) cholesterol to HDL (good) cholesterol, which causes plaque to build up on the lining of the arteries. This condition results in a narrowing of the arteries themselves. Arthur Schoenstadt, MD identifies this plaque buildup, called atherosclerosis, a primary agent in the following health risks:

•Angina
•Coronary heart disease
•Heart arrhythmias -- an irregular heart rhythm
•Transient ischemic attack (TIA, or "mini" stroke)
•Heart attack
•Stroke
•Peripheral artery disease
•High blood pressure.

Critics of the new modified fat suggest it is actually worse for your long term health than its trans fat predecessors. Early scientific reports suggest IE Fats raise blood glucose levels higher than trans fats while simultaneously depressing the level of insulin. This could indicate a link between IE Fats and increased incidence of diabetes.

Until more is known, IE fats should be avoided merely for the fact that they are indeed, saturated fats. Check the packaging even when the label claims to have no trans fats. Seek out unsaturated fats instead.

Polyunsaturated fat food sources include fish oil, corn oil, flaxseed oil, hemp oil, pumpkin seed oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil,and sunflower oil. Monounsaturated fat is found in high content in olive, peanut, and canola oils, sunflower oil and sesame oil. Other sources include avocados, peanut butter, and many nuts and seeds. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids are suggested to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

Sunflower oil is fairly new to most consumers. It's gaining in popularity as a healthier, and yet tasty, alternative to butter. Tom Smude, makes Premium Cold Pressed Virgin Sunflower Oil on his family farm near Pierz, Minnesota. He says "fish is unbelievable with it."

According to a recent article in the Brainerd County Dispatch, Smude Premium Cold Pressed Virgin Sunflower oil is available at "Christmas Point in Baxter and the Crow Wing Food Co-Op in Brainerd. It's on shelves in St. Cloud, Walker, Little Falls and Nisswa. Prairie Bay restaurant in Baxter is using it for a cooking oil. At Grand Casino, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is using the oil - about 15 to 20 gallons a week - for its movie theater popcorn."

Get un-stuck and lose weight this week

Sometimes we reach a weight loss plateau, in which it seems that no matter what we do, we can't seem to budge the weight. Typical advice to overcome weight loss plateaus goes along the lines of eating fewer calories, eating more often (sometimes even consuming more calories), or doing more exercise.

What if you have counted calories, upped the exercise, and still the weight won't move? The problem might not be the food in your mouth, it might actually have more to do with the mess in your closet.

Our bodies are the reflection of our inner selves (not just what we put in our selves.) Sometimes the best way to renew our inner selves, is to re-vamp the outer accoutrements that define our lives.

You might not think cleaning a closet can make you lose weight, but when we hold onto the things, people, and activities that don't reflect who we are, or what we cherish and value, then we are constantly seeing ourselves in a mirror of inauthenticity. A jump start to getting un-stuck is to purge the things that are taking up that life-giving energy and excitement that we need to flourish!

Julie Morgenston has written a powerful book called SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life: A Four-Step Guide to Getting Unstuck, in which she shares a transformative process to release objects and obligations that are weighing you down, in order to give you the freedom to live a lighter, richer life. It's not just about letting things go, it's about discovering who you are and what moves you forward.

Read it. You will be amazed at how good it feels to let go of what you no longer need, including those extra pounds!

More ways to sneak nutrition into your favorite foods!

Who doesn't love gooey cheesy quesadillas? My kids order a cheese quesadilla, all three of the little ones that is, every time we go to Little Fiesta. If you haven't been there - go. Now. The food is great, plentiful and tasty; the service is good, the margaritas are potent and the atmosphere is friendly. Try out your Spanish on the staff - they think it's charming. That's what I tell myself, anyway.

OK, it's a tortilla filled with cheese and grilled, right? Sure, but did you know you can tweak it just a bit and make it a full serving of vegetables and whole grains? Here's how:

Start with whole grain or whole wheat tortillas. I like the Food Club brand at Coborn's Supermarket because they have 1 gram of fat!

Top it with some fresh yellow squash you've pureed in the blender with about a tbl of water and a dash of salt. I like yellow squash instead of Zucchini because it blends into the cheese, whahahahha - that's a nefarious laugh.

Top that with some cheddar or a blend of cheddar and jack, or whatever cheese you like on your quesadillas.

Add in some fresh, chopped Vidalia onions (they are sweet) - yup, my kids like onions.

Add some salsa (I just tried this delicious green olive-tomatillo salsa from Super One natural foods - really good and different!)

Top it with another tortilla and heat in the microwave, or grill, or broil, or pan-fry till warmed through. Cut into 4 wedges and serve with sour cream, guacamole, or more salsa. My kids eat it plain, except for Faith who eats a little quesadilla with her sour cream, not the other way around!

Buen Apetito! It's still cheesy, and gooey, and your kids will never know they are eating squash! Unless they are mine and love vegetables ;)
